Description

A delicious, layered Turkish cake infused with warm spices and soaked in sweet syrup, perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar (for syrup)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt
  • Butter or oil (for greasing pans)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the cake pans by greasing them lightly with butter or oil.
  3. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Whip eggs and sugar: In a separate bowl, beat eggs and sugar until fluffy and light.
  5. Combine wet and dry ingredients by gradually adding the dry mixture to the wet while alternating with milk.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool the cakes in pans for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack.
  9. Prepare the syrup: In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, and lemon juice, simmering until sugar dissolves.
  10. Soak the cakes with syrup after they have cooled.
  11. Frost and assemble with your preferred frosting.

Notes

For maximum flavor, prepare the cake a day in advance. The syrup can be stored in the fridge for up to a week.
