Description

A delightful homemade soda bread featuring a golden crust and tender, moist crumb, perfect for pairing with creamy Irish butter.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon Fine sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar (optional)
  • 1.75 cups Cold buttermilk
  • 4 tablespoons Irish butter, softened
  • Additional Irish butter for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In your mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and optional sugar.
  3. Make the dough: Create a well in the center and pour in the cold buttermilk, stirring until the dough begins to take shape.
  4. Shape the loaf: Dust your clean work surface with flour, transfer the dough, and knead gently for about 30 seconds, then form into a round loaf.
  5. Score the top: Place the loaf on your prepared baking sheet and cut a deep cross in the top.
  6. Bake: Slide the loaf into your preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the crust is golden.
  7. Cool and serve: Allow the loaf to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving with butter.
