- 1 teaspoon Fine sea salt
- 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar (optional)
- 1.75 cups Cold buttermilk
- 4 tablespoons Irish butter, softened
- Additional Irish butter for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Combine dry ingredients: In your mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and optional sugar.
- Make the dough: Create a well in the center and pour in the cold buttermilk, stirring until the dough begins to take shape.
- Shape the loaf: Dust your clean work surface with flour, transfer the dough, and knead gently for about 30 seconds, then form into a round loaf.
- Score the top: Place the loaf on your prepared baking sheet and cut a deep cross in the top.
- Bake: Slide the loaf into your preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the crust is golden.
- Cool and serve: Allow the loaf to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving with butter.
